M. J. Slater Writes Clever Romantic Suspense
Please welcome romantic suspense author, M. J. Slater. She has a new novel to share with you.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’ve always loved reading. I would spend my summers on the stoop buried in the book instead of playing. When I was younger, I dreamt about being a writer, but life and money got in the way. When I grew up, I took a career in finance. While I love economics, when the pandemic came along and we were all trapped at home, I took the leap and started writing, pursuing my childhood dream.
What event or experience in your life affected you as a writer?
The biggest event for my writing was the sudden passing of my mother last year. The novel I’m currently working on is a reflection of that grief and has been a cathartic way for me examine my feelings about death and change. It’s cheaper than therapy. 😊
Why did you become a romance writer?
Romance novels are my guilty pleasure, and I think that goes for a lot of women. We love reliving that time in our lives where everything feels so new and full of potential. Romance novels offered me escape when I needed it. By writing about romance, I am trying to provide that same sustenance to others.
What inspired the idea for this book?
The book is a romantic suspense novel centered around a woman accused of murdering her husband. She’s placed at the scene via a very specific coat. At the time, I was walking around my neighborhood in Chicago and realized that literally every woman was wearing an identical coat to mine. While unique initially, it had gone viral, and now I was much like everyone else. Obviously, my brain twisted it into, what kind of crime could I commit in this situation?
Can you tell us about any other upcoming books, series, or writing plans?
I’m currently working on my second novel, The Arrow’s Reckoning. It’s about a young woman who has to move back home to take care of her dying mother. She gets involved in a neighbor’s drama, which leads to murder. She also reconnects with her childhood friend Trey, a member of the local police force who has definitely grown up and out of his gangly teenager phase.

M. J. Slater is a native Chicagoan. After spending fifteen years in finance, she decided to switch gears and start writing. She loves film noir, yoga, and walking along Lake Michigan with her dog. She lives in the suburbs with her husband and two girls.
