Patrick Field Writes Paranormal Romantasy
Patrick Field shares his newest release, a paranormal romantasy, and tantalizes us with his upcoming projects.
Welcome, Patrick: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
After being in scientifically related higher education in one way or another for most of my life, I never imagined that I would become an author who has written three paranormal romantasy novels during my “third act” of life. At first glance, it is difficult to see why a professor who taught the natural laws would dabble in the supernatural, but that is the most freeing part. The freedom to create a supernatural world that invades the natural, where I make the rules! Readers won’t be disappointed; they will get a dose of the neuroscience and anatomical disciplines in my novels as they explore the paranormal narratives.
What event or experience in your life affected you as a writer?
I began writing my first book, a memoir about my “interesting” childhood entitled Prince Patrick as a fun project, but when my Mom was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, I knew I had to self-publish it and dedicate it to her so that she could read it while undergoing treatment before she passed. This, in effect, gave me the writing bug, and my first full-length novel, The Malevolent, was ready to be published 1 year later.
Why did you include romance in your story?
From the beginning of my writing career, I was determined to write novels with LGBTQ+ protagonists and themes in the paranormal literary world. That being said, romantic relationships are the easiest plot device to convey queer sensibilities. So, romance + paranormal/speculative/horror storytelling = Romantasy, an emerging genre that I have been placed into by TWRP and other literary organizations.
Question 4: What inspired the idea for this book?
The American tragedy of the Salem Witch Trials was my primary inspiration. What if there was an actual warlock/witch that was executed during the witch trial hysteria and was reincarnated three hundred years later as a young gay man in the early 1990s, the dawn of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement? Add in a hot rugby player as a romantic interest that complicates the warlock’s ascension into powers beyond his comprehension, and you get a good taste of what the novel is about.
Can you tell us about any other upcoming books, series, or writing plans?
Yes. I have a novel entitled Bloodstone, involving pirate lore and blood magic set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, that is currently in the hands of many publishing houses. I also have a short story, “The Strange Case of Edgar Delaney,” for lovers of cats and the paranormal that I’m shopping to major e-zines. I also have a novel in development about witches and their familiars that is in the beta reader/copyright phase. Hopefully, by the time this interview broadcasts Bloodstone and “The Strange Case of Edgar Delaney” will have found a home!
Elias Doever, accused of being a warlock by the residents of the Village of Bedfordshire, Massachusetts in 1692, is executed via the “ducking chair” into a well of holy water. A force erupts from his chest, killing him and escaping the well. Three hundred years later, the force from the well, Beladon, contacts Dorian Leeves, a young man with supernatural abilities, and informs him that he possesses the same powers as Elias Doever. Dorian will accomplish his ascension into powers beyond his belief if he can re-unite the “three bloods” of Elias Doever, himself, and Beladon. However, the body was buried in secret, unconsecrated ground. Dorian’s new love interest, Toby Blessing, creates complications for his quest to find the skeletal remains of Elias Doever for his ascension. Dorian must decide whether to abandon his ascension and power or embrace a life with Toby in the present day.

After 25 years in higher education, Patrick R. Field traded in teaching and textbooks to pursue his passion of spine-chilling fiction writing. Holding a Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences and Neuroscience, his experience informs his unique blend of scientific knowledge with supernatural storytelling.

His latter novels, Servant (2023) and The Bedfordshire Warlock (2024), also published by The Wild Rose Press, were written throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Both Servant and The Bedfordshire Warlock were semi-finalists in the Kindle Book Review Best of Indie in the Horror/Suspense category in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Up next are Bloodstone, an M/M romantasy set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and featuring pirate lore and blood magic, and the short story “The Strange Case of Edgar Delaney,” a tale for cat lovers and fans of paranormal fantasy.
